Sad Occasion

A funeral mass for Avonte Oquendo will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at St. Joseph’s Catholic church at 371 Sixth Avenue. It’s not clear what connection the family has to the West Village, but a private service for close family and friends will be held before the mass at Perazzo funeral home on Bleecker Street.

The city has followed this story since his disappearance from his Queens school in October and mourned his loss when remains found on a Queens beach this past Tuesday were positively identified as being those of Avonte Oquendo.

The funeral mass is expected to be attended by large numbers of people from all over the city. We all felt worry then heartbreak over his fate. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Water Everywhere, and Not a Drop to Drink

A 140-year-old water main break at 13th Street and Fifth Avenue has made a mess of the area, destroyed retail properties, and left about 75 residences and commercial properties without water.  The repairs are expected to take several days.
