Another Day, Another Snow Storm

SnowFeb_Ω3SmallerWhat looked like a forecast of a few flurries mixed with rain has now turned into what’s predicted to be eight inches of snow by the end of the day.

The Weather Channel is calling today’s snow Winter Storm Maximus, and warns us that another storm, Winter Storm Nika, will hit us tomorrow night, but will probably be a wintry mix when it gets here.

But hold on! The weekend forecast is for a 30% chance of snow on Saturday, and 40% chance for Sunday.

Take heart. The temperatures for the next few days will be mostly in the 30′s. Next week? Who knows.

In Memory of Ed Koch

From February 1, 2013

When Ed Koch became Mayor in 1978, the city was dark, dirty and dangerous. He not only brought the city out of its deep financial crisis, but built the foundation that Mayors Giuliani and Bloomberg used to make this city a safer and more stable place to live and visit.

He was truly a great New Yorker who loved the city beyond all else, and became a cheerleader and great symbol for New York City. He lived in the Village, a place where he began his political career.

Ed, you did great.

Going to the Dogs

Update 2/13/2013: Affenpinscher (Toy Group) wins Best in Show 2013, with Old English Sheepdog taking second place.TreeWalkerCaptionAlert! West Village dog-lovers!

Westminster Dog Show Comes to Town February 11 and 12

(Note from West Village Word: We know that a lot of you are fans of
cross-breed rescues over purebred show dogs, but we hope you can
still enjoy this great annual dog show.)

The Westminster Kennel Club Show and other dog-related events will be taking place during “Westminster Week” which starts this coming week. The show itself will be taking place on Monday February 11 and Tuesday February 12.

There will be some important changes to the show this year, including a change of RussellTerrierCaptionvenue for the daytime breed judging, which will now take place Monday and Tuesday at Piers 92/94 at West 55 Street.

The benching area, where you can meet the show dogs and talk to their owners or
handlers, will also be at the piers. If you’ve been attending the shows for the past several years, you know that the benching area (or backstage) has been overly crowded, and this new space should give you a little more room to walk around and see all the dogs up close.

EnglishSetterCaptionThe number of dogs in the show will increase dramatically, and will include non-AKC
champions for the first time since 1991.

Another big (and we think welcome!) change will be the awarding of a Reserve Best in
Show dog award given immediately following Best in Show judging. So if the French
Bulldog you were rooting for lost out to a Great Dane, or vice versa, there’s still hope!

There will be two new breeds added to the AKC roster this year — The Tree Walker Coonhound and the Russell Terrier.

As always, the breed judging can be seen on streaming video at the Westminster website, and the Group judging will be shown on CNBC Monday night and USA Network Tuesday night, from 8-11 pm.
