Do You Know What This Is?

VillageVolcanoThis  mound of tar and concrete  mysteriously appeared at the corner of Seventh Avenue and Barrow Street in 1982 is referred to as The Village Volcano. It was originally black and steamy, and has since been painted white and has cooled off.

It’s the result of a steam leak on the sidewalk which Christie Powers from the now long-gone Buffalo Roadhouse decided to cover with tar and concrete, and there it’s stayed.

  1. I believe it was there as early as 1980. I took my daughter to day care at Greenwich House beginning in 1980 and I remember seeing it there then and wondering what it was. I remember the steam.
